Chapter 23
Sotiny
One day until I was back at the office didnât give me hardly enough time to prepare the mixed emotions I had in regards to a certain playboy. Alex and I agreed to one month. But I wasnât entirely sure what that might entail. Iâd never gone on dates or had a fling. And despite my burning desire to fuck him in Ithaca, I was becoming more anxious the longer I had to wait and think about it.
I chewed on my thumbnail waiting for my coffee to be called out in our local café. Memories of our weekend rushed toward me every spare moment I seemed to have. Iâd used my vibrator and eggs on myself multiple times yesterday and none of it remotely took the edge off. Which was infuriatingly disturbing.
The bell jingled as someone stepped into the café, and as if summoned by the mere thought, I was staring right at Alexâs cocky smile, creating a dimple. I looked away, my heart fluttering. Why did he have such a boyish effect on me? I was a woman in her thirties dammit. Surely, I shouldnât be feeling like a teenager.
âAlex!â the barista flirted. âHow was your trip away in Ithaca?â
âIt was really good, I really think we made some progress,â he said, looking over his shoulder, his gaze dropping to the deep blue scarf tightly wrapped around my neck. I touched it self-consciously. The three bruising marks heâd given me in the span of two nights couldnât be completely covered by concealer. And despite my irritation that heâd left them there, Iâd also dazed at them longingly thinking about how theyâd happened.
With hands resting in his jacket pockets, he stood beside me casually. âThatâs a nice scarf.â
âYes, well Iâd much prefer it if I could take it off at some point today, however due to being branded by some animal, I donât have much of a choice,â I gritted out.
His chuckle flooded warmth to my core. âIâm sure that animal heard no complaints at the time. Ironically you should see the claw marks down my back. Someone might think I was mauled by a bear.â
I smoothed over my hair, refusing to let the embarrassment show on my face.
âYou didnât reply to my last text message yesterday.â he inquired.
My eyebrows knitted together in confusion. âIt wasnât a question.â
He seemed taken aback. âDoes it have to be a question for you to keep a conversation going?â
âI find texting annoying.â
âYou donât exactly thrive off talking to people in person either,â he pointed out.
âTrue.â I searched the room, certain someone would overhear our conversation or learn about our dirty secret. I didnât want to be the next office affair that others spoke about. I didnât want anyone to look or think about me twice. I reiterated, âRule number oneââ
âNo one in the office can find out. I know, Sots. This is our little secret,â he said casually, still watching our coffees being made. âYou look beautiful today by the way.â
My breath hitched, the customary reaction to say something snide in return bubbling up.
